The Options and Channels Available to Relatives for the Therapy and Health Care of an Sick Elderly Relation

If a senior relative has recently suffered a major injury or illness which impedes, or perhaps prevents them from following an ordinary life, an array of routes exist: care provided by a member of the family, either with or without respite care, guidance from your local council to continue to stay home, or long-term shelter at a nursing care home (private or NHS).

Whatever solution you pick, it must be thought about extensively; are you and/or other family members willing to spare personal time to look after the senior family member?  Can you (and/or other family members) afford the nursing care fees?  Do you and/or relatives feel unhappy regarding the placement of the aged relative into care home?

Should you and/or members of the family be capable of giving up personal time to look after a family member, you can ask a medical professional such as a doctor, or your local health authority to request guidance starting a health care program can decrease anxiety and uncertainty.  The local health authority might propose the introduction of respite care into the care program to alleviate pressure if full-time care is required.

If full-time care at home is not attainable, are you and/or relations capable of funding the care home fees?  If you and/or your family, as a collective, cannot the nursing and care home fees, you might be qualified for the National Health Service’s (NHS) Continuing Healthcare program.  Ask your local health authority to analyse your family member’s needs.  If the cared-for relation complies with the requirements regarded necessary by the local health board, the care program should be partially or completely funded by the NHS, reliant on your financial situation.  The local health authority will help choose the ideal care home.  If your request for economic help goes against you, thus do not get any funding, you can put forth an appeal to the local health board with the assistance of a lawyer adept in medical law.

If you and/or your relatives are sad about placing a relative into a care home, you could request a trial period at a care home to look at the choice.
